Asparagus, Bacon with Caramelised Onion
Okay this asparagus recipe came to me on a whim! It was a spur of the moment inspiration from a few ingredients left in the fridge. And I tell you what, often the best creations come from very little effort and thought involved. I almost didn’t share this with you. My thoughts went back and forth questioning whether this was even a “recipe”. But it was so fantastic I had to share it. It’s what this blog is about. Sharing food ideas that are going to bring satisfying, simple foods that will bring joy to your families table. However, if you are looking for a quick side dish to serve with your lamb roast and crispy roast potatoes at your Sunday family dinner, this could be it!
It comprises of only 4 ingredients, asparagus (of course), bacon (surprised?) of and caramelised onions. That’s three right? Well it does need a little butter or olive oil to bring out the beautiful flavours of the ingredients. Oh and one of the best parts of this dish, it was made in one pan.
Firstly, start with chopping off the ends of the asparagus. I find these to be a little chewy once cooked, especially if the asparagus are on the thick side.
Chop the onions and bacon as these will be cooked first.
After that, add the onions and bacon to the buttered pan and cook until tender and the onions are translucent.

Asparagus, Bacon with Caramelised Onions
- 2 bunch asparagus
- 2 shallot onions (chopped)
- 100 g bacon
- 1 tbsp butter
- Place the butter into a pan on medium heat.
- Add onions and bacon and cook for 2 minutes or until the onions turn translucent.
- Top the asparagus onto the onion and bacon and cook for 5 minutes or until cooked to your liking.
- Season to taste.
