Intro to Computing for Administrative Staff

Computer User Agreement

The computer user agreement outlines acceptable use of your Reed accounts and computing resources.

Kerberos Account

Kerberos is your primary computing account used for , Google & , our web portal , the wireless network, and many other services at Reed. Make sure this is a unique password not used with any other account. Change your password or security questions at .

Two-step Authentication

Two-step authentication provides an extra layer of security beyond your username and password and helps prevent unauthorized access to your data. Requires the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone or a hardware token provided by CUS.

Wireless and Wired Network

For a wireless connection, make sure you connect to the “Reed1x” or "Reed" network (the name will vary by building). Many administrative services are restricted and will only work from those networks. The “ReedXenia” and "Reed Guest" wireless networks are for visitors. A wired ethernet connection may also be available in your office.

Computer & Software

Your Reed computer is allocated with basic productivity software, like Microsoft Office, Chrome and Safari web browsers, and departmental printers. Additional software supported by IT is available in the Self Service application.

Data Backups

Data stored on your computer (in the User folder) is automatically backed up through Crashplan. You will receive an email if your computer has not backed up in 7 and 14 days. Please contact CUS if you receive this warning while actively using the computer.

Computer Encryption & Other Security Settings

Your computer hard drive is protected with Apple’s whole-disk encryption, FileVault, which keeps your data safe from bad guys if your computer is lost or stolen. Additional settings, such as requiring a password to wake from sleep or screensaver further protects your data from unauthorized access.

Printers & Copiers

Printers and copiers are available for install from the Self Service application.

Administrative Computing Account

Many of Reed’s administrative services, such as Fileshares (formerly called Homeserver) and Banner use your Kerberos password. These resources are only available on campus, or off campus through the VPN.

Homeserver/Fileshares

The "Homeserver" also referred to as "Fileshares" is secure network file storage used by many administrative departments. Log in using your Kerberos account password.

Microsoft Remote Desktop (MRD)

Available in Self Service, Microsoft Remote Desktop (MRD) allows access to PC-based applications such as Blackboard, Arms, EMS, and Internet Explorer. Log in using your Kerberos account password.

Password Management

Do not share your Reed passwords with anyone. Ever. No doubt you have many new passwords to remember. Password mangement software, such as Bitwarden, can help you generate strong, separate passwords for each service you need to log into, and integrate with your web browser.

Data Security

Depending on your position, you may have access to sensitive or confidential college data. Only keep this data stored on your Reed computer for as long as needed to complete your work and delete it when you are done. Consult your supervisor or InfoSec Liaison about other relevant data security practices that relate to your position.

Remote Access

Remote access to administrative resources such as Banner and Homeserver/Fileshares requires the VPN. Please see our VPN web page if you need to access them remotely.
