Information Resource Centers & Student Labs

Software usually available in these labs has been made available in a Virtual Computer Lab.

General-purpose student computing lab, known as the Information Resource Center (IRC), is located in the Educational Technology Center. All current students have access to the IRC 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for work on course assignments or independent projects. The IRC is located on the first floor, directly across from the Help Desk.

Several specialty student computing labs exist on campus: Physics, Biology, Psychology, Music & Theater (Performing Arts Resource Center), Chemistry, and the Academic Resource Center (the DoJo). Check with the relevant department to find out computer lab availability.

To use the IRCs, you must follow the acceptable use policy outlined in the Computer User Agreement, and you need to have a Reed computing account. If you have not already done so, follow these steps to .

The IRC contains Macintosh computers running macOS.  A wide variety of academic software is available for student use, and Computer User Services provides software help for the most frequently used programs. In addition, there are computing classrooms in ETC 205 (18 machines), ETC 208 (22 machines), and ETC 211 (16 machines).

Windows virtual machines are available in ETC 205 for students. Faculty can access Windows virtual machines in the mLab on the second floor of the ETC. Instructions for accessing Windows virtuals machines using VMware Fusion can be found here.

Students can use laser printers in the IRCs (as well as other locations on campus) for 5¢ a page, billed automatically to their account. Each year, the first $25 of printing is free. Color printing is also available in the IRC and Library for 30¢ per page.  Check the Help pages for detailed information on printing.

In case you run into computing problems, the Help Desk is located immediately outside the IRCs.
