Minor Music

What You’ll Study in the Music Minor

Develop a broad range of skills for the interpretation and understanding of music, participate in performance activities, and learn in an academic community that believes all music is valuable. Start your music studies by taking a beginning music course or auditioning for one of Reed’s performance groups. Continue your musical studies with courses that examine music theory or a specific culture’s musical heritage. Choose additional electives from the music department to learn more about the rich world of music from many perspectives.

Collaborative Practice and Performance Spaces

Reed's Performing Arts Building houses the music, dance, and theatre departments. The practice room suite boasts 14 soundproofed practice rooms containing 10 grand pianos, 3 studio uprights, 2 harpsichords, and a percussion room; the music rehearsal hall seats 120 for lectures, master classes, and film screenings; and the performing arts resource center houses music scores and media.

Friday@4 Music Series

Our Friday@4 series, featuring a variety of musical performances, events, and lectures by Reed students, faculty, and staff, take place in Eliot Hall chapel or the Performing Arts Building. 

Meet Our Faculty

Mark Burford, R.P. Wollenberg Professor of Music, has been at Reed since 2007. He began his career with a focus on Brahms and Austro-German concert music of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In the last 10 years, he’s focused on Black popular music studies. In 2023, he was awarded the Royal Musical Association’s Dent Medal for 2022.
