What You’ll Study in the Minor in Greek and Latin

We offer three minors in the department of Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean Studies: Greek, Latin, and Greek and Latin. Study the history, archaeology, and culture of the ancient Greek and Roman Mediterranean, and take courses in Ancient Greek and Latin. Gain familiarity with and understanding of classical scholarship, including knowledge of the tools used for research in classical studies, and analyze texts, material culture, and primary sources in Greek or Latin.

Advanced Language Skills

The three minors offered by the department ensure your work in Greek or Latin language is at the advanced level. For a minor in Greek or Latin, students  complete five units of the language with at least one advanced course. For a minor in Greek and Latin, students complete six units of the languages with two advanced courses.

Deepen your understanding of ancient Mediterranean cultures and hone your academic skills through on-site instruction and exploration. Women in the Ancient World

Examine the female experience in the ancient Mediterranean from the middle of the eighth century BCE to the second century CE in this course with Professor Ellen Millender. Give special emphasis to the coincidences and conflicts between literary images of women and the realities of their everyday experience recoverable through documentary and archaeological evidence as you study the portrayal, status, roles, and treatment of women in the ancient world.
